Think of a hobby and there’s every chance you will find the subject covered on a themed cruise.

Golf, music, photography, opera, wine, arts and crafts, you name it, and your favourite subject is likely to feature on a cruise ship.

The latest craze to be taken on board by cruise lines is TV’s Strictly Come Dancing theme, reflecting the increased popularity of ballroom dancing.

While lines such as P&O Cruises and Fred Olsen Cruise Lines offer ballroom dancing cruises, Thomson Cruises has gone a step further with a full programme called Destiny Dance Fever.

To be held on board the company’s largest ship Thomson destiny, the competition will run in January and February, culminating in a grand final in April judged by Strictly Come Dancing winners Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova.

A series of eight dance cruises will run in January on Canary Islands and Morocco cruises with dance experts on board hosting classes and demonstrations.

The couple who most impress will be invited to compete in the final on April 11.

Among the most extensive themed cruise operators is Fred Olsen, which runs Arts Club cruises covering an extensive range of topics and specialist golfing holidays.

There are 20 different themed activities, ranging from painting, bride and history through to The Archers, comedy and gardening.

Music festivals at sea are part of the P&O Cruises offering with leading experts and musicians giving opera, operetta, recitals, music quizzes and interviews.

The line also runs themed cruises covering literature, antiques, gardening, wine and art appreciation and ballroom dancing.

P&O Cruises’ New Horizons programme on board its smallest and recently refurbished ship Artemis includes talks, workshops and classes on many subjects, led by leading specialists.

Subjects covered include British heritage, literature and civilisations, astronomy and genealogy, classical music, bridge, craft and art tuition, dance and floristry.

For a full-blown classical music experience at sea, Peter Deilmann Cruises is running an International Music Gala on board the MS Deutschland in September.

Sailing from Hamburg to Monte Carlo, the cruise features the Wurttemburg Chamber Orchestra and a number of classical music celebrities. Throughout the 13-night cruise there will be recitals and concerts as well as introductions and talks to learn more about composers and their works.

A Grand Finale features music and fireworks in an end of cruise extravaganza. Cycling tours also feature on this itinerary.

The line also offers horseback riding through beautiful trails while ashore in countries ranging from Sweden to Spain. Hiking cruises cover Scotland, Denmark, Iceland and Norway and Great Britain and Ireland, with all tours arranged including a guide, picnics and transfers.

The majority of today’s cruise ships feature modern spa and therapy facilities offering the best in massage and well-being, with dedicated wellness spa packages.
